STYLES OF SHORTS
denim
Denims shorts are the best way to make your outfit scream summer. When buying make sure you vary the lengths and washes. When you want to add edge to your style find destroyed denim or partially faded.
colored
Colored styles make it a lot easier to complete a look. Vary the fabrics from denim to softer materials. The softer materials should be like in cargos, thus giving you a more outdoorsy look. When choosing a color, don't pick one that is like the color you have mainly but pick one that matches. It's summer so buy a lot of bright colors. Another trend is white shorts, but don't start wearing them until you get your color or it will make you look whiter than you actually are.
patterns
A major stylish pattern is plaid. The way you can add your own flair is by finding shorts that mix warm and cool tones. Another pattern that not many people wear but it's very cute, is patchwork. Find shorts that have different patches of color on them. I have ones that have different patterned patches and they are adorable.
WHAT TO WEAR WiTH THEM
Avoid long tunics, they make the shorts look a lot shorter and no one likes people looking like they are trying to snag someone on the corner, if you know what I mean. If you really want to wear a long tank or shirt, tuck it in slightly to alter the length.
Look for colored tights to wear underneath, they add a level of chicness that is hard to get another way. If you don't want to look too uptight, make a couple of rips in them. It makes the look best for parties (ripped) or fancy events (plain black tights, possibly with a small knit pattern or lace).
To look sporty, wear some knee high or thigh high socks. They actually make your legs look more toned. Try bright colors or patterns.
For shoes, it all really depends on the occasion. If you want to be more fancy, wear pumps, espadrilles, or strappy shoes. A key to look formal would be shoes with ribbons that tie up your leg, but only in a subdued and more formal color like a nice white linen (small patterns like baby florals would be nice also). When you want to be more casual, use simple ballet flats but wear in a crazy color or pattern. You could also wear some copper/gold/silver gladiators.
